Old posts from my very first travel website and my first backpacking trip (a year in 2000-2001)! Sun – After another afternoon kiteboarding session (long gone are the days when Steve stayed out there for 6 hours – now down to a manageable 1 hour), we drove to the other side of the island to Little Makena for quite the sunset beach party.

There were probably 200 people there, some nudes, a variety of funky smells wafting about, a drum circle, and fire dancers! It was way cool. They even lit torches to help everyone get down the lava rock path on the way out in the dark.
Mon – We thought of trying to get out on standby today, but we really have too much food so we decided to stick around. We took an awesome drive on the Northwest part of the island. It was beautiful and not as much traffic as the road to Hana. It had lots of great views, stacked little rocks, a fantastic blowhole
that can get up to 70 feet high, ocean swimming pools, a narrow one-lane winding road, and supposedly the best banana bread on the planet but we were not that impressed with the free samples.

We got back in time for Steve to go kiting while Leslie stayed at the hostel and helped them with some web work (which she did in trade for chocolate). Steve had a great day on the water and even saw a mama sea turtle with her baby. Then he had a bit of a crash that led him to a self rescue since he was so far out and his lines were all tangled. After a long walk back to the car, it took over an hour to find his board which had washed up on shore a mile away! Enjoying the last of our wine and cheese hit the spot when he got home.
Io Valley is a beautiful little hike.
